Cipcic is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago that predominantly creates paintings, photography, installations, and digital images that examine the relationship of loss, nostalgia, and memory. These themes are intrinsically tied to family photos and videos from his childhood and those of relatives and ancestors. Cipcic’s work blends photorealism, abstraction, and digital glitch artifacts that visually morph, obscure, and reconstitute the figure in vibrant chroma. This is intended as a way to breathe new life into and immortalize the lost moment and lost love ones in the long standing artistic tradition of memento mori—reminding us of the preciousness of life and our own mortality. His recent work explores holograms and their status as a dead technology and novelty of the past. Through recreation of the holographic aesthetic with family photos and a myriad of techniques and materials, Cipcic ties in his repeating themes of nostalgia and loss. There is a constant momentum in his work to recreate optical illusions in new and evolving ways. Cipcic graduated Magna Cum Laude in University of Illinois at Chicago’s BFA program. He has participated in ACRE’s Artist Residency and Chicago Artist Coalition’s LAUNCH residency. Cipcic has shown work in Chicago, Des Moines, and Grand Rapids.
